In downtown Regina, Union Station, built in 1912, stands as an enduring prairie landmark. Decommissioned in 1996, it was transformed into Casino Regina, welcoming more than 20 million visitors annually. However, its interiors had seen little improvement since that time.
SaskGaming engaged Kasian to refresh the casino in a way that preserved its historic character while appealing to a younger demographic. The design needed to balance a contemporary update with respect for the heritage fabric, eschewing a flashy Vegas-style approach for something more practical and timeless.
Historic features such as the station clock, chandelier, departure signs, and ticketing booths were retained. Close collaboration with the heritage officer built trust with both client and community, ensuring a design that honoured the past while supporting the casino’s future.
The interiors adopt a refined, club-like aesthetic, with gaming rooms as engaging backdrops rather than overwhelming spectacles. A grand central staircase connects the two levels, while custom metal light fixtures crafted by a local fabricator provide both atmosphere and function. Bespoke carpeting overlays the original terrazzo floors, protecting the heritage finish.
The Union Station Restaurant and Bar was also revitalized, featuring an upscale design and a decommissioned Canadian Pacific Railway car repurposed as a dining room.
Since reopening, the casino has seen an increase in revenue with the restaurant and bar emerging as stand-out successes. The project modernized a venue’s interior, attracting new visitors, and celebrates an important piece of Regina’s architectural history.
“This project served as a wonderful opportunity to preserve a piece of Regina’s history, while creating something new and exciting for patrons to enjoy.” – Phil Wong, Associate – Interior Designer
