The Merritt Fire Zone Operations and Provincial Training Centre supports the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations’ wildfire management activities within one of British Columbia’s largest suppression zones. With new capital funding, the project expanded the Merritt Fire Zone office and established a modern training hub to improve both operational efficiency and fire response capability.
The facility responds directly to the needs of wildfire unit crews, integrating administrative functions, hands-on training, and assessment spaces for firefighting recruits. Classrooms are designed to simulate real-world field conditions, allowing crews to develop and test critical skills before deployment. During wildfire season, the building also serves as a strategic base for out-of-province personnel, providing essential coordination and support functions.
At the heart of the building is a central courtyard that operates as both a training ground and a communal space. Accessible and flexible, it supports a range of uses from instruction to team building to recreation. Its C-shaped form maintains key sightlines to the adjacent runway and helipads while mitigating Merritt’s prevailing southern winds. A commercial kitchen also helps feed the many fire crew members during peak wildfire season.
The new centre enhances wildfire preparedness, safety, and collaboration, while supporting those who protect B.C.’s forests and communities.
